Track and Field Dropped from Intercollegiate Level

Union, N.J. (6/28/10) – Kean University has announced that men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field will no longer compete at the intercollegiate level.  This decision was based on a number of factors, including but not limited to the declining number of women competing over the last several years.

Given the economic crisis and declining funding for higher education, it is imperative to allocate available resources as efficiently as possible to ensure student success.  The restructuring of the intercollegiate sports program at Kean University will maximize available financial resources and enable the athletic program to compete at the highest level in the New Jersey Athletic Conference and to participate in the affiliated Skyline Conference and Eastern College Athletic Conference.

Given these factors, the athletic department finds it necessary to direct its resources to those areas that best reflect students’ interests based on participation in athletics teams.  In this era of reduced funding, Kean also feels it is in the students’ best interests and those of the university to concentrate resources to teams supported by full-time head coaches.
