Whittier, Calif. (3/9/17) – The Kean University baseball team ended their west coast trip with a "W" as they defeated Whittier College, 2-1, on Thursday.
Rookie Justin Hernandez (2-0) gutted out the win, tossing eight and a third innings allowing one and five hits. He fanned three and walked no one. Southpaw Mike Occhi picked up his first save of the year getting the final two outs.
It was a pitchers' duel throughout much of the contest but Kean (8-5) was able to scratch across a run in the seventh as Frank LoGuidice started the frame with a single. Catcher Nik Fraim followed with a single of his own to put runners on first and second. Mike Fidanza moved both into scoring position with a sacrifice and Ivan Rivera pushed across the first run with a sac fly.
The Cougars added insurance, which came in handy, with another single run in the eighth as LoGuidice (pictured left) registered a two out, RBI single, scoring Matt Krupa who reached on a single of his own.
The Poets (3-12) didn't go down easily in the ninth as D. Washington led off by being hit by a pitch and advancing to second on a wild pitch. He moved 90 feet away on a groundout and would come around to score on a double from Matthew Macey. Occhi entered the game and Macey moved himself one base closer after a balk. After a walk to Michael Angulo putting the winning run aboard, Occhi buckled down and got a groundout to third (which held the runner) and a flyout to end the game.
In all, Kean collected 11 hits with Derek Walker, LoGuidice, Fraim and Fidanza all recording two.
