Union, N.J. (10/8/16) – The Kean University field hockey team used a late surge to pull away and remain perfect by topping SUNY Oneonta, 5-2, in non-conference action on Saturday.
Junior Krista LaMaina led the way for #19 Kean (12-0) with a hat trick in today's action.
The Cougars jumped right out of the gate as K. LaMaina took a Raykena Brown pass in front of the cage and tipped it in from the left side for a quick 1-0 just a minute and a half into the action. The score would remain that way until the 25th minute when it was K. LaMaina again who found the back of the cage, this time off an assist from Teresa Carr.
Oneonta (2-8) pulled within one on two separate occasions in the second half, first as Amanda Frayer benefited from the penalty corner opportunity and tipped in a shot from the top of the circle from Sierra Palmatier. Brown pushed the advantage out to 3-1 three minutes later but the Red Dragons cut it to one once more as Allyson Wells pushed in a deflection in the 51st minute.
Kean used a late surge with two goals just a minute apart to give them a comfortable cushion down the stretch. Jordan Colna used an unassisted marker to make it 4-2 and K. LaMaina competed the hat-trick just a minute later off a pretty pass from Carr.
Kean continues non-conference action on Tuesday when they host SUNY New Paltz.
