St. Mary's City, Md. (11/22/11) – The Kean University men's basketball team fell to host St. Mary's College of Maryland by the final of 71-61, Tuesday evening in non-conference action.
Sophomore Kyle Latorre (pictured left) had a game-high 15 points as the Cougars fell to 1-3 overall this season. Kean enjoys a short holiday break and will jump into New Jersey Athletic Conference action on Wednesday, November 30th when they host Rutgers-Camden at 6 p.m.
After exchanging baskets in the early goings, the Seahawks then used a 12-0 run to sprint out to an 18-5 lead with just over 12 minutes to go in the first half. St. Mary's would go on to retain that advantage throughout the first half and headed into the break with a 39-25 lead. Sophomore Kenny Pace led the Cougars with 10 first-half points.
The Seahawks (3-1) would control most of the second half, but the Cougars made a late charge, closing the gap to single digits as senior Andrew Kirey hit back-to-back free throws to put the score at 65-56, followed by a free throw from junior Mike Shaughnessy to bring the score to 65-57 with just under two minutes remaining in the contest. Despite making two more buckets down the stretch, St. Mary's was able to hold on with five points from the charity stripe.
Pace finished with 14 points while sophomore Michael Burton added 13.
