UNION, N.J. (3/18/17) – The Kean University men's lacrosse team opened its Skyline Conference schedule with an epic 10-9 duel against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at home on Saturday.
Junior Pat Coll had five goals in the game for the Mariners to lead their comeback.
Kean surrendered the first two scores of the day, but went on a 4-0 run that straddled the first and second quarters to take a 4-3 lead into halftime. Alec Ramos scored one and assisted another to lead the Cougar attack.
Kean outshot the Merchant Marine Academy 21-12 and won 6-of-9 first-half faceoffs.
Jack Bushey scored earlier in the game, but rang one off the post in the fourth quarter as Kean was nursing a two-goal lead. USMMA rallied to tie it, but Tyler Roberto scored on a feed from Matt Brodley to put Kean up 8-7 with 4:47 to play.
The game swung there. The Mariners asked for a stick check, and it was found that one of the Cougars was carrying an illegal crosse and assessed a three-minute, non-releasable penalty. Coll and Nick Treon scored man-up goals on the ensuing power play to flip the lead with 2:35 left.
Forrest Terpe (pictured left) scored with 41 seconds remaining to bring the Cougars within one, but time ran out on Kean's own comeback bid.
Ryan Sieb made six saves for Kean, while Zac Tilley earned the win in relief with four second half saves for the Merchant Marine Academy. Brodley finished with his second hat trick of the season.
The Mariners are now 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the Skyline. Kean moves to 2-3 and 0-1 in the league.
The Cougars will close out their season-long homestand on Wednesday when they host Delaware Valley University at 6 p.m.
