Union, N.J. (3/1/17) – Michael Jazgarski helped the Hunter College men's volleyball team to a straight set win over Kean University in non-conference action on Wednesday evening.
The Hawks (13-2) held #10 Kean University (11-7) to a .074 hitting percentage in the match. Statistically Kean recorded more points (45.5 to 40), more blocks (7.5 to 4) and more aces (6 to 5), but in the end tallied 25 hitting errors to send them to tonight's defeat.
Hunter raced out to a 5-1 lead to open play before the Cougars called a timeout. Kean then clawed their way back to knot things at seven-all on an ace from Steven Zarzycki. The score would see-saw back to ties throughout the entire first set, but the Cougars were only able to take their first lead at 20-19 on an ace from Brandon Lee. Trailing 24-22, the Hawks were able to score the necessary four straight points to take set one with two kills from Steven Tarquinio and two Kean attack errors.
Hunter then paced the second set, holding a tie or lead throughout. Kean knotted the set at four-all, but the Hawks held the Cougars to a -.086 attack percentage in the frame, as Hunter coasted to a 25-19 set win.
The third set proved to be a back-and-forth affair before the last tie of 11-all. Hunter then took the lead for good, despite Kean keeping close for the remainder of the contest.
For the Hawks, Jazgarski collected a match-high 10 kills with Tarquinio registered six kills and a .625 hitting percentage.
Kean will take a break and return to action on Thursday, March 16th when they travel to Baruch College.
