BUENA VISTA, Va. (4/7/18) - Steven Zarzycki totaled a double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs as the #4 Kean University men's volleyball team captured the top overall seed and extended their match winning streak to 25 with a 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-16, 26-24) victory over No. 12 Southern Virginia University in the regular season finale on Saturday evening.
Nick Buseski finished with 13 kills and six digs for the Cougars who improve to 31-2 overall and 12-1 in the CVC. Nahuel Recabarren totaled a match-high 18 kills for the Knights who finish their season at 16-8 overall and 8-5 in the CVC.
With tonight's victory, Kean tied the program record for wins in a season at 31, set during the 2015 and 2016 seasons. The Cougars also earned hosting duties for the CVC semifinals (Fri. Apr. 13th) and the finals (Sat. Apr. 14th).
Kean swept the final three sets after dropping the opening set, 25-21 with a .464 hitting percentage by the Knights. The Cougars bounced back with victories in set two and set three, holding the Knights to a .000 percentage in set two and a negative percentage in set three.
A tight fourth set had Kean deadlocked at 24-24 before the Cougars notched back-to-back points with a kill by Ian Capp and an assisted block from Capp and Shayron Taylor to win the set 26-24. Capp handed out 45 assists while totaling four kills and four digs. Nico Mercadante totaled eight kills and seven digs, while Taylor notched eight kills and five blocks, including the 71st solo block of his Kean career, a new program standard.
Kean totaled a team .359 hitting percentage and only had 10 errors for the match, while SVU finished with a .174 percentage and 25 errors.
Head Coach Charlie Ginex and the Cougars will return to action on Friday, Apr. 13th in the semifinals of the CVC Tournament against the winner of Tuesday's quarterfinal matchup between Juniata College and Eastern Mennonite University. The match time is to be determined and will be announced tomorrow.
