No. 13 Softball Splits in NJAC Opener with Ramapo

MAHWAH, N.J. (4/2/17) – The Kean University softball team was on both ends of two classic matchups with NJAC rival Ramapo College in both teams' conference-opening games on Sunday. Kean won 4-3 before falling 8-6 in extra innings.

After trailing early in game one 1-0, Samantha Krakower cracked a 2-RBI double in the left-centerfield gap in the third, scoring Cayleen Rizo and Dana Knapp to flip the lead to Kean 2-1.

Harper Patsko tied the game for the Roadrunners in the next inning with a solo shot to left, and Ramapo took a one-run lead in the home half of the fifth.

Knapp started a Kean rally in the sixth with a single down the leftfield line. Jacqueline Riley also singled to set the table for Emily Bissonnette (pictured left). The senior came through with a two-out RBI single through the left side to knot the game back up at three.

In the seventh, Olivia Zengel was hit by a pitch and came around to score the go-ahead run on a double by Emily Sabo.

Shannon McMahon improved her record to 9-0 this season with the complete-game victory. She allowed just two earned runs and did not walk any of the 31 batters she faced.

Ramapo scored first again in game two, but Kean exploded for five runs in the top of the sixth inning. Rati, Sabo, Rizo, Knapp and Riley (1-5 in the Cougar lineup) all reached base and scored in the frame. The last four all stroked basehits to get on.

The Roadrunners answered with four in the bottom of the same inning, tying the game and eventually sending it to extra innings. Knapp plated the placed runner from second base in the top half of the eighth, but Nicole Mahoney knocked a walk-off three-run homer over the leftfield fence to give Ramapo the split.

The Cougars are next scheduled to host Montclair State University in an NJAC doubleheader on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
