Knapp, McMahon Lead Softball Past #10 Rowan in NJAC Opener

Union, N.J. (5/2/17) – Senior Dana Knapp belted a two run homer to give the Kean University softball team a 3-2 win over #10 Rowan University in the opening round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament on Tuesday.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Cayleen Rizo worked a leadoff walk.  That setup Knapp who tried, unsuccessfully, to bunt Rizo to into scoring position, giving her two strikes.  After a ball, Knapp lined her third homerun of the season over the left center field wall to give Kean their first and only needed lead of the day.

The Profs (31-8) scored in their first at-bat as Morgan Smith singled up the middle for an RBI with one out in the first for a quick 1-0 lead.

Kean (30-7) knotted the game up in the fourth as Caroline Ratti was hit-by-a-pitch with the bases loaded.

Rowan took the lead right back in the top of the fifth as Damariz Mercado started off the frame with a double and moved to third on a groundout.  She would come around to score on a groundout RBI from Carly Anderson to move back on top, 2-1.

Senior Shannon McMahon (pictured left) picked up her 19th win of the season in the complete game effort as she allowed eight hits and no walks with two strikeouts.  Lauren Shannon (16-3) suffered the loss in relief.

#3 Kean will face #2 William Paterson University on Friday at 6 p.m. at Cougar Field.
