Softball Advances to Regional Championship Game in 7-2 Win Over CNU

Union, N.J. (5/14/17) – Sophomore Cayleen Rizo launched her second homerun of the regional tournament in helping the Kean University softball team to a 7-2 win over Christopher Newport University.

With the win the Cougars (35-7) advance to the regional tournament championship game on Monday at 11 a.m. against an opponent yet to be determined.

With the loss, the Captains (32-9) will square off in an elimination game at 2 p.m. today.

Kean pounced early with two runs in the bottom of the first as Rizo lined her fourth homerun of the season.  The Cougars added to that with three more in the third as Emily Sabo started things off with a double.  A walk to Rizo and a single to right from Dana Knapp loaded the bases for Jacqueline Riley who made it 4-0 with a two RBI double.  Sara Vocisano later made it 5-0 with an infield single.

CNU erased the shutout in the fourth as Jessica Sprinkle singled up the middle for two RBI.

The Cougars closed out the scoring in the fourth as Sabo started off the frame with an infield single and moved to third on Rizo's single.  Sabo (pictured left) would swipe home for a 6-2 advantage and Samantha Krakower rounded out the scoring with an RBI single in the gap.

Senior Shannon McMahon earned her 24th win of the season with the complete game effort.  She allowed two runs and four hits. 

Offensively Sabo and Knapp recorded three hits each while Rizo scored three times.
