Softball Wins NCAA Union Regional

Union, N.J. (5/15/17) – Kean University rallied for three runs in the sixth to push past Christopher Newport University in the winner-take-all championship game of the Union Regional on Monday afternoon by the final of 4-1.

Senior Emily Sabo led the way and was 3-for-4 on the afternoon.  Sabo, who batted .667 in the tournament (10-of-15) with four runs scored was named the Most Outstanding Player.

Trailing 1-0 after an unearned run crossed for CNU (34-10) it was Sabo who started the two out rally in the sixth.  She singled up the middle and moved into scoring position after a four pitch walk to Cayleen Rizo.  Senior Dana Knapp came through with a double against the wall in center to take the lead, 2-1.  Jacqueline Riley added to that with an RBI single.

The Cougars (36-8) added insurance in the seventh, again with two outs.  Olivia Zengel lined a triple to right, her first of the season and came around to score on a single from Caroline Ratti.

Senior Shannon McMahon (25-3) retired the Captains in order in the seventh to preserve the win.  She allowed one unearned run and three hits with two walks and one strikeout.
