#15 Softball Tallies 21 Runs in Doubleheader Sweep of NJCU

UNION, N.J. (4/10/18)- The #15 Kean University softball team collected 21 runs on 18 hits in a doubleheader sweep of New Jersey City University on Tuesday afternoon.

GAME 1: Kean 11, New Jersey City 0 (5 Inn.)

Olivia Zengel went 2-for-4 with three RBI's and two runs scored, while Katie Debbie finished 2-for-3 with a run scored as the Cougars (18-3, 4-1 NJAC) totaled 11 runs on 11 hits in the shutout victory over the Gothic Knights (4-15, 0-5 NJAC).

Kean produced all 11 runs in the second and third innings, including seven runs on seven hits in the second. The Cougars batted around the order in that inning with Samantha Krakower, Maria Bonfanti, Zengel, Cayleen Rizo, and Erin Hollyfield all picking up RBI's as Kean stormed to a 7-0 lead.

The Cougars piled on four more runs in the third with a two-RBI single from Zengel and a two-RBI double from Rizo.

Jacqueline Riley improved to 7-1 overall with five strikeouts in the complete-game victory.

GAME 2: Kean 10, New Jersey City 1 (5 Inn.)

Julie Raba went 2-for-2 with two RBI's and two runs scored, while Kacie Worswick finished 2-for-3 with two RBI's, two runs scored and an inside the park homerun as Kean (19-3, 5-1 NJAC) totaled another 10 runs to complete the sweep of NJCU (4-16, 0-6).

Kean actually trailed 1-0 when they came to bat in the bottom of the first, but the Cougars didn't waste much time putting runs on the scoreboard. Kean collected seven runs on six hits, including a four-run second inning that saw Worswick hit an inside the park homerun to right field.

The Cougars maintained an 8-1 lead entering the bottom of the fourth. In that inning, Debbie and Kaitlin Stahlbrand both tallied RBI's to stretch Kean's lead to 10-1.

Stahlbrand improved to 7-2 overall with four strikeouts in the complete-game victory.

Head Coach Margie Acker and the Cougars will return to action in Center Valley, Pa. on Thursday, Apr. 12th, against the Bulldogs of DeSales University for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
