Galloway, N.J. (4/15/17) – The Kean University women's lacrosse team came up one goal short, falling by the final of 10-9 to Stockton University on Saturday in NJAC action.
The close game featured five ties and a margin of two goals or less for all but 27 seconds of the 60-minute contest.
Stockton (8-2, 2-1 NJAC) opened up a three-goal lead late in the game and held on for the win.
Emily Stasuk registered three goals and a game-high seven draw controls for Kean. Alexa Rubino led the Ospreys with three goals and an assist.
Kean's Brittany Ballack opened the scoring with the first of her game-high four goals but Rubino and Mary Schmid answered to put Stockton on top 2-1. After Ballack tied the game 2-2, tallies by Kristen Russo and Abbey Yannacone gave the Ospreys a 4-2 advantage.
Two straight goals 50 seconds apart by Taylor Hynes tied it at 4-4. Kim Raichelson put Stockton in front 5-4 but Ballack's third marker of the half came with 28 seconds left and resulted in a 5-5 tie at the break.
One minute into the second half, Stasuk gave the Cougars their second and final lead at 6-5. Stockton responded by pumping in three goals in 2:23 to go ahead 8-6. Schmid, Rubino and Yannacone hit the net during the spurt. After Stasuk got Kean within 8-7, Rubino scored at the 8:46 mark followed by Schmid for a 10-7 advantage with 4:22 to play.
The Cougars came right back with goals by Stasuk (pictured left) and Ballack just 31 seconds apart to make it 10-9 with 3:24 to go. Stockton managed to protect the slim lead the rest of the way without allowing a shot as they held on for the one-goal triumph.
Goalie Nikki Apostolopoulos made six saves for the Cougars while Stockton goalkeeper Maura Twiggs finished with eight.
The Cougars enjoy a short break and return to action on Saturday when they travel to Rowan University.
