Wayne, N.J. (10/10/06) - William Paterson (8-4, 2-2 NJAC) fought to a 3-2 field hockey victory against visiting Kean (5-5, 1-3 NJAC) on Tuesday evening at Wightman Stadium.

Sophomore forward Meghan Hall (Turnersville, N.J.) converted the Pioneers' third shot of the game, giving WPU a 1-0 lead 16 minutes into the contest. The Cougars gained the equalizer 5:59 before halftime thanks to an unassisted strike by freshman forward Brittany Gibbs (West Deptford, N.J.), but William Paterson took the lead again when Hall connected on a Tina Londino (Gloucester City, N.J.) pass l:18 later.

The Cougars tied the game when senior forward Vicki Egerer (Washington, N.J.) pushed the ball out on a penalty corner, then received the ball back at the post and stuffed it into the cage, making it a 2-2 game with 14:31 remaining in regulation.

The Pioneers had an excellent chance to end the contest, but Amie Shannon's (Millville, N.J.) penalty corner shot was stopped during the final seconds of the second half. Shannon also had the defensive play of the game for the Pioneers with her defensive save in the 60th minute that helped keep the game tied.

Kean had the dangerous opportunities of the first overtime, but it was William Paterson that went on the offensive in the second extra period. Winkelspecht finally gave the Pioneers the victory when she deflected in Hall's shot with 9:01 on the clock

Senior Grace Browne (Hackensack, N.J.) made nine saves for the victorious Pioneers, while Kean freshman Jenni Barry (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) made two saves.

The Cougars return to action on Thursday, October 12, when they host Castleton State College in non-conference action at 5 p.m.
