Cougars Fall to #7 Rowan in NJAC Football

GLASSBORO, N.J. (10/21/06) - Rowan University scored a pair of
touchdowns in the third quarter, defeating Kean University, 16-12,
in New Jersey Athletic Conference football action on Saturday
afternoon. With the win, the seventh ranked Profs improve to 5-1
overall and 4-0 in the conference, while the Cougars dropped to 4-3
overall record and 2-2 in the NJAC.
With a 3-3 tie at halftime, the Cougars broke the deadlock at 6:34
in the third quarter, with a 25 yard field goal by junior kicker
Jonathan Robinson (Brick, N.J.), capping a 73-yard, 12-play drive
that included 22 yards on three carries by freshman running back
Jared Chunn (Eatontown, N.J.).
The Profs took the lead for good with 3:42 left in the quarter, a
four yard touchdown run by sophomore back John Impagliazzo (Somers
Point, N.J.). Senior quarterback Mike Orihel (Trenton, N.J.) set up
the touchdown with a 31-yard rush to the Kean five yard line during
the drive.
Just over a minute and a half later, sophomore back Davon Edwards
(Del Haven, N.J.) had a 10 yard touchdown run for the 16-6
advantage after a missed extra point. Prior to that score, Rowan
sophomore linebacker Zach Garren (Gibbstown, N.J.) recovered a
fumble by Kean sophomore wide receiver Durell Dukes (Elizabeth,
N.J.), giving Rowan the ball on the Kean 19-yard line. Edwards
carried the ball twice, scoring on his second touch.
Kean cut the deficit to four points after scoring on a 34 yard
touchdown from junior quarterback A.J. Roque (Matawan, N.J.) to
sophomore wide receiver James Felton (Plainfield, N.J.)) with 4:27
left in the game to make the score 16-12 after a missed PAT.
The Cougars regained possession after a Rowan punt with just under
three minutes remaining and down four points, however the Cougars
turned the ball over on downs and the Profs ran out the clock for
the NJAC win.
For Kean, Roque threw for 192 yards and one touchdown on 19 of 33
pass attempts. Felton and Dukes totaled 71 and 64 yards receiving,
respectively, while Chunn rushed for 28 yards on six carries.
Freshman linebacker Jason Leeds (Egg Harbor City, N.J.) posted
eight tackles, while junior safety Ryan Staton (Mays Landing, N.J.)
and sophomore linebacker Jake Pew (Sussex, N.J.) made seven stops
apiece. Freshman defensive lineman John Parker (Egg Harbor City,
N.J.) forced one fumble and defensive backs Guy Ulmer-Santos
(Jersey City, N.J.) and Aharon Kiett (Atlantic City, N.J.) each had
one interception.
The Profs were led by Edwards with 74 yards rushing and one
touchdown on 16 carries. Orihel completed 13 of 22 passes for 88
yards. He also rushed for 37 yards on six carries. Junior wide
receiver Dustin Katcher (Milltown, N.J.) caught six passes for 42
yards.
The nation's leading defense held the Cougar offense in check,
allowing only 192 yards of total offense, all through the air. Also
ranked second in the country in rush defense, allowing only 8.8
yards a game, Rowan also allowed zero rushing yards in the
game.
Rowan linebacker Chris Pinto (Barnegat, N.J.) recorded a game-high
10 tackles and one sack for a loss of nine yards, while junior
defensive back Kelvin Bellamy (Trenton,N.J.) and Garren each made
six stops. Defensive ends Keith Heimerl (Sewell, N.J.) and Randy
Tosh (Columbia, N.J.) had one sack apiece.
Rowan kicker Daniel Roberts (Hamilton, N.J.) connected on a 27-yard
field as time expired in the first quarter to give Rowan a 3-0
lead. The Profs started on the Cougars' 25 yard line and Orihel hit
Katcher with a seven yard pass to set up the kick. Kean tied the
game with a 27-yard field goal by Robinson with 1:25 remaining in
the half. Kiett intercepted a pass by Orihel, giving the Cougars
the ball on the Profs' 41 yard line. Roque completed three passes
for 25 yards in the drive.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday, October 28th, when they
host William Paterson University in NJAC action at 1 p.m.
