Field Hockey Handles Manhattanville, 4-1
UNION, N.J. (10/21/06) - Kean University
freshman forward Brittany Gibbs (West Deptford, N.J.) netted a pair
of goals to lead the Cougars past Manhattanville College in
non-conference field hockey action on Saturday afternoon. With
their third straight victory, the Cougars improved to 8-5 overall,
while the Valiants dropped to 2-15 this season.
The Cougars took a 1-0 lead early in the game, as Gibbs took a pass
in front of the cage from junior midfielder Alli Green
(West Deptford, N.J.) just 5:39 into the contest.
Manhattanville tied the game before halftime, as senior forward
Alissa Tyghter (North Haven, Conn.) scored from
the top of the circle off the assist from junior forward
Kelsey Verrillo (Guilford, Conn.) in the 26th
minute.
In the second half, the Cougars answered with a pair of goals in
the first ten minutes. Sophomore forward Stephanie Cirino
(Warminster, Pa.) tipped-in a pass from senior forward
Vicki Egerer (Washington, N.J.) just 4:15 into the
half, while Gibbs added her second goal off a tip-in from junior
forward Caitlin Slemmer (Glendora, N.J.).
Sophomore Katie McGee (Cherry Hill, N.J.) tallied
the insurance goal with 19:05 remaining in the game, scoring from
the top of the circle off a pass from Green.
For the game, the Cougars held a 21-12 edge in shots and a 13-9
advantage in penalty corners. Kean freshman keeper stopped six
shots, while sophomore keeper Lauren Gagnon (Staffordville,
Conn.) made 10 saves for Manhattanville.
The Cougars return to action on Tuesday, October 12, when they host
second-ranked The College of New Jersey in New Jersey Athletic
Conference action at 7:30 p.m.
