Women's Soccer Hands Rowan First Loss of Season,
2-1
UNION, N.J. (10/21/06) - Kean University sophomore forward
Amanda Pitts (Rahway, N.J.) and senior midfielder Brienne Campbell
(Freehold, N.J.) each tallied goals, as the Cougars defeated Rowan
University in New Jersey Athletic Conference women's soccer action
on Saturday evening. The victory improved Kean to 10-3-2 overall,
4-3-1 in the conference, while Rowan suffers its first loss of the
year to fall to 13-1-2 overall, 5-1-2 in the NJAC.
Late in the opening half, Rowan senior goalkeeper Gabrielle Ditchey
(Mt. Laurel, N.J.) deflected a shot by Pitts right back to the
sophomore who then found the back of the net on her second attempt
to give the Cougars the 1-0 lead with 2:45 left in the first
half.
Kean extended the lead to 2-0 in the second half, as Campbell
scored her third goal of the year off the direct kick from about
30-yards out with 22:44 left in the game.
With less than five minutes remaining in the contest, Rowan cut the
deficit in half, as freshman midfielder Krista Verzi (Delran, N.J.)
scored off the saved shot from sophomore forward Kaitlyn Florio
M(Ocean City, N.J.) with just 2:48 left in the game.
The Cougars held a 19-16 edge in shots, while Rowan had a slight
3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Kean freshman goalkeeper Nicole Groszew (Denville, N.J.) made eight
saves in the victory, while Ditchey stopped 13 shots for Rowan.
The Cougars return to action on Wednesday, October 25, when they
travel to William Paterson University for the NJAC regular season
finale at 4 p.m. Rowan takes on defending NJAC champion The College
of New Jersey in Ewing, N.J., the same day at 7:30 p.m.
