Football Posts Perfect Home Record in 2006
UNION, N.J. (11/4/06)-Junior quarterback AJ Roque (Matawan,
N.J.) threw two touchdowns and rushed for one more as Kean
University rolled past Western Connecticut State University, 34-6,
Saturday afternoon in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC)
action.
Junior tailback Anthony Stewart (Atlantic City, N.J.) rushed for 71
yards on eight carries, including a 14 yard touchdown early in the
fourth quarter for the Cougars (6-3, 4-2 NJAC). With the win, Kean
has now posted a perfect 4-0 record at Alumni Stadium this fall for
just the third time in the program's history. Senior wide receiver
Adamis Gonzalez (Meriden, Conn.) collected 84 receiving yards for
the Colonials (5-4, 2-4 NJAC) who have dropped back-to-back
contests following a 24-21 defeat by Buffalo State last
weekend.
After a scoreless first quarter, Kean jumped on the board first as
sophomore wide receiver Durell Dukes (Elizabeth, N.J.) hauled in a
16 yard pass from Roque to cap a 14-play, 80-yard drive. In their
next possession, the Cougars marched 99 yards in 10 plays for their
second TD of the afternoon. Junior wide receiver Brian Williams
(Pleasantville, N.J.) completed the drive with a 42-yard reception
to propel Kean to a 14-0 lead.
After holding WCSU to a three and out series to start the third
quarter, the Cougars held on to the ball for over eight minutes in
their next drive. Roque rushed for 15 yards in the drive, including
a seven yard run for his third TD of the afternoon.
Stewart used Kean's next possession by recording 57 yards on four
carries, ending the drive with a 14 yard TD run to put the Cougars
ahead, 28-0, early in the fourth quarter. After another three and
out series for the Colonials, Kean needed only one play for their
next strike. After great field position put the ball on the WCSU 36
yardline, rookie Jared Chunn (Eatontown, N.J.) carried the ball in
for Kean's final score of the afternoon.
Western Connecticut State broke up the shutout late in the game as
they traveled 57 yards on five plays. Senior Jeff Ward
(Pleasantville, N.J.) tallied the score on a five yard rush with
just under a minute to play in the game. Freshman kicker Kevin
March's (New Haven, C.T.) point after attempt sailed wide, leaving
the score at 34-6.
In a relatively fast-moving game that lasted just two hours and
twenty minutes, neither team has a turnover.
Roque completed an efficient 15-of-20 passes for 233 yards in the
win for Kean. Sophomore James Felton (Plainfield, N.J.) and
Williams finished with 47 and 43 receiving yards respectively.
Defensively for the Cougars, senior William Parks (Newark, N.J.)
recorded seven total tackles, including two sacks for 14 yards and
three tackles for a loss. Sophomore George Williams (Matawan, N.J.)
had six tackles and a pass breakup. John Hoke (Tomkins Cove, N.Y.)
had a game-high nine total tackles while Michael Gregor (Trumbull,
CT) had seven tackles and a tackle for a loss for WCSU.
For the Colonials, quarterback James Williams (Wolcott, C.T.) was
11-of-20 for 125 yards.
Kean will travel to The College of New Jersey on Saturday, November
11th at 12:00 p.m., to close out the 2006 regular season. Western
Connecticut will host Montclair State also at Noon.
