Men's Soccer Battles Arcadia, 3-3

HILLSIDE, N.J. (9/13/06) - Kean University junior goalkeeper Kyle Crego (Ocean City, Md.) made seven saves, including a key stop late in the second overtime, as the Cougars tied Arcadia University, 3-3, in men's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon. The Cougars record stands at 3-1-1, while Arcadia is now 1-1-1 this season.

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead early in the first half, as junior midfielder Damien Serafin (Wallington, N.J.) dribbled around the defender in the left side of the box and fired a shot into the right corner for second goal of the season. Arcadia tied the game less than 10 minutes later, as sophomore back Matt Benner (Telford, Pa.) scored off the assist from senior forward Stephan Szygiel (Chalfont, Pa.).

In the second half, Kean opened up the scoring as junior midfielder Konrad Kruczek (Clifton, N.J.) headed in a free ball from sophomore back Christian Raigoza (Paterson, N.J.) for the 2-1 lead in the 51st minute. Just 1:24 later, the Cougars were called for a trip inside the box and senior midfielder Matt Abate (Marlton, N.J.) connected on the penalty kick to tie the game back up.

The Cougars again took a one-goal lead, as sophomore forward Jorge Aguilar (Paterson, N.J.) scored off the assist from freshman midfielder Ronald Quiroz (Fairview, N.J.) in the 66th minute. Arcadia tied the game one final time in the 73rd minute, as senior midfielder Zach Askin (Elkins Park, Pa.) picked up a loose ball following a save on the direct kick from Abate.

In the overtime sessions, the Cougars had two shots in the first extra session that Arcadia freshman keeper Jeff Kratohwill (Pennsburg, Pa.) saved. In the second overtime period, Cregoalso made a game-saving stop in the final minutes. Kratohwill finished the game with four saves.

In the physical contest that had both teams combine for 45 fouls and five yellow cards, the Cougars held a slight edge in shots, 16-15, and a 10-5 advantage in corner kicks.

The Cougars return to action on Saturday, September 16, when they host Richard Stockton College in the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener for both teams at 3 p.m.
