Cougars Stomp Morrisville, 37-7
MORRISVILLE, N.Y. - (9/23/06) Kean University raced out to a
27-7 halftime lead behind three TD passes from junior quarterback
AJ Roque (Matawan, N.J.) en route to a 37-7 victory over
SUNY-Morrisville, in front of 500 fans at Drake Field this
afternoon non-conference football action. With the victory, the
Cougars improved to 2-1 for the first time in 12 years, while the
Mustangs fall to 0-4. The win also, marks the first time the
program has recorded back-to-back wins since 1995.
Freshman Jarred Chunn (Eatontown, N.J.) started the scoring for the
Cougars as he took a screen pass and rumbled 46-yards for the score
on the opening drive of the game. Late in the half, Kean added to
its lead when Roque hooked up with Durell Dukes (Elizabeth, N.J.)
for a 38-yard touchdown strike.
With 10:55 left in the half, Roque found senior Jarred Crowley
(Trenton, N.J.) open in the back corner of the end zone to push the
lead to 20-0. Morrisville answered on their next drive when QB Bill
Poling (Waretown, N.J.) hit Derrick Woodard (Whitesboro, N.Y.) for
a 52-yard scoring strike. However, any momentum generated by the
Mustangs on that drive was erased when sophomore Brian Williams
(Pleasantville, N.J.) took the subsequent kick off back 89-yards to
push the lead back to 27-7.
The Cougars then went to the running game in the second half and
put the game out of reach when they strung together a 13-play
99-yard drive that was capped by a six-yard rushing TD by Anthony
Stewart (Atlantic City, N.J.). On that drive, Kean ran the ball 10
times for 62 yards, including the last seven plays. Junior Jon
Robinson (Brick, N.J.) closed out the scoring with 42-yard field
goal. That was a career long for Robinson and the fifth longest in
school history.
Overall in the game the Cougars rolled to a four-year best 262
yards rushing on 50 carries. Sophomore James Felton (Plainfield,
N.J.) had 69-yards on eight carries, Stewart finished with 42 yards
on 10 carries, while Williams had 41 yards rushing, and 31-yardss
receiving. Roque, finished the day going 14-for-22 for 227 yards
and extended his school record for TD passes to 33. On the
receiving end Dukes hauled in five balls for 69 yards and one
score, while Chunn added two catches for 56 yards and a TD.
Defensively, Guy Ulmer-Santos (Jersey City, N.J.) led the Cougars
with nine total tackles, including three sacks from his strong
safety position. Mo El Sherbini (Carteret, N.J.) had a productive
day with seven total tackles. Senior Aahron Kiett (Atlantic City,
N.J.) had three tackles and a career-high five pass breakups.
Freshman defensive lineman Jose Marti (Lodi, N.J.) picked up his
first two sacks of his career.
