Women's Hoops Cruise Past John Jay, 110-36

UNION, N.J. (11/28/07) - Freshman forward Angelica Bermudez (Belleville, N.J.) scored a career-high 21 points to lead #5/10 Kean University past visiting John Jay College, 110-36, in non-conference women's basketball action on Wednesday evening.

The Cougars (4-0) scored more than 100 points for the second straight game, as all 10 players dressed for the game scored at least four points, with five Cougars reaching double-figures. 

Kean hit 58.4 percent of their shots, hitting 45-of-77 from the floor and 7-of-15 from long range, while limiting the Bloodhounds (1-5) to just 27.1 percent shooting (16-of-59). 

The Cougars score 25 straight points in the opening half to take a 32-6 lead with 8:50 left en-route to a 60-12 lead at halftime.  Bermudez hit 6-of-7 shots from the floor to score 12 points in the half, while junior guard Melissa Beyruti (Union City, N.J.) led the way with 13 points on the strength of 3-of-4 shooting from downtown. 

Also in double figures for the Cougars, sophomore guard Cardiss Jackman (Tobyhanna, Pa.) added 10 points and five assists in the first half. 

For John Jay, junior Janina Jurewicz-Johnson (New York, N.Y.) had four points and three rebounds, while senior guard Ganimete Ukperaj (Bellmore, N.Y.) had four rebounds and two steals in the opening half. 

In the second-half, Kean continued to extend their lead, with the largest margin of the game coming with the 74-point victory. 

Beyruti finished with 16 points, four assists and three blocks, while Jackman added 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting, six assists and six rebounds.  Senior center Chari' Cooper (Paulsboro, N.J.) had her fourth double-double in as many games, finishing with 10 points, 15 rebounds, five steals and five blocks.

Freshman April Smith (Barnegat, N.J.) scored a career-high 14 points, hitting 4-of-6 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the foul line. 

Johnson led the Bloodhounds with 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting, while freshman guard Dominique Grice (North Babylon, N.Y.) added nine points. 

The Cougars return to action on Friday, November 30, when they host their third straight CUNY opponent with a 7 p.m. game versus Baruch College.
