Baseball Breezes Past Farmingdale, 10-4

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (3/1/07) - The Kean University baseball team made it two in a row, defeating host Farmingdale State University, 10-4, in eight innings, Wednesday afternoon.

The Cougars jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning off a triple to leftcenter from senior centerfielder Joseph D'Andrea (Hamilton, N.J.), scoring junior second baseman Maikel De La Rosa (Newark, N.J.) who singled to lead off the game.

The Rams came back to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning with a pair of run-scoring singles by junior right fielder Anthony Mazzilli (North Babylon, N.Y.) and junior infielder Frank Italiano (Sayville, N.Y.).

That lead would fade as Kean capitalized on three errors, four walks and a hit batsman in the 4th to make it 7-2. Freshman Matt Donoghue (Old Bridge, N.J.) and junior Eric Ammirata (Hamilton, N.J.) drove in the first two runs of the inning on back-to-back bases-loaded walks.

Farmingdale State would commit two more errors in a three-run 6th for the Cougars. De La Rosa started the inning off with a double, followed by D'Andrea's single to place runners on first and third with no outs. Junior Dan Mattonelli (Hamilton, N.J.) then pushed across De La Rosa with an RBI single through the left side for his second RBI of the afternoon.

Senior Dan Zeffiro (Old Bridge, N.J.) picked up his first win of the season tossing six innings, allowing four runs, while striking out six.

Offensively, De La Rosa was 2-for-4 with three runs scored, while D'Andrea finished with two hits and two RBI.

Farmingdale State out hit Kean 10-7 but the Rams gave it back by committing a total of six errors and giving up seven walks on the day.

The Cougars will now play the waiting game for their next opponent due to mother nature. Check the website for continuous updates.
