Cougars Fall at USMMA, 16-8
Kings Point, N.Y. (3/31/07) - After a thirty
minute game delay, the United States Merchant Marine Academy
defeated Kean University in Skyline men's lacrosse action, 16-8,
Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Mariners improve to 6-3, 3-0 in the Skyline
conference. The Cougars drop to 5-3, 1-2 in conference play.
By the end of the first period, the game was knotted at three
goals apiece.
In the second quarter, the Dougherty brothers combined to outscore
the Cougars, 4-3. Senior Sean Dougherty connected on two
goals with 7:02 and 5:15 left to play after Kean's Dennis
Lukacsko (Lincoln Park, N.J.) opened the quarter up with a
goal. Senior Steve Gill (Patchogue, N.Y.)
swung in a game tying goal with 5:03 to play, but sophomore Brennan
Dougherty answered with two of his three goals to give the Mariners
a two goal advantage. Just thirty seconds later, Lukacsko
scored to cut the Mariner lead to one.
The final quarter proved to be the difference as the Mariner
defense held off the Cougars and recorded six uncontested goals.
The Cougars will return to action on Wednesday, April
4th as they travel to Centenary College for a Skyline
Conference matchup.
