Kean Splits With Stockton, 3-2 & 4-6

UNION, N.J. (4/21/07) - Senior Dan Zeffiro (Old Bridge, N.J.) tossed a complete game to earn the win in game one while the Ospreys rallied in the sixth in game two to earn a split in New Jersey Athletic Conference action at Jim Hynes Stadium Saturday afternoon.  Kean (24-6, 11-3 NJAC) defeated Richard Stockton (19-11-1, 7-7-1 NJAC), 3-2 in game one, with the Ospreys edging the Cougars, 6-4 in the nightcap.

Game One

Stockton jumped on the board in the top of the third as Eddie Ortiz (Vineland, N.J.) singled home Brian Reagle (Magnolia, N.J.).  Kean went ahead in the fourth with an RBI double by senior Perry Schatzow (Ocean Twp., N.J.) and a squeeze bunt by Ryan Clark (Livingston, N.J.).

The Ospreys tied things up in the seventh on a solo shot off the bat of Brian Paras (Cape May Courthouse, N.J.).

The Cougars won the game in the bottom of the ninth as junior Derek Gianakas (Edison, N.J.) lead off the inning with a single, advancing to second on an errant throw.  Senior Aaron Richard (Plainfield, N.J.) then sacrificed Gianakas to third followed by a sacrifice fly by Schatzow to win the game.

Zeffiro improved to 6-1 with the complete game win.  He allowed eight hits and two runs while fanning nine and walking just one.

Offensively Gianakas was 3-for-4 with two runs scored while designated hitter Mike Shymanski (Edison, N.J.) was 2-for-3.

Freshman Matt Hunt (Marlton, N.J.) suffered the loss for the Ospreys.  Hunt (3-1) allowed three runs (two earned) and seven hits.

Game Two

It was a see-saw affair in game two.  Kean took the lead early and headed into the sixth inning with a 4-1 advantage, plating single runs in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings.  Richard Stockton tied things up, however, with a three run sixth.  With one out and runners on first and second, Paras delivered again with a two RBI double to left field.  He would later cross the plate as the tying run on a sacrifice fly.

The Ospreys took the lead for good in the seventh with a single run.  With one out, Kean brought in reliever Joe Rizzo (Staten Island, N.Y.) who in turn got Ortiz to pop up on a squeeze attempt.  Rizzo laid out for the ball to record the second out.  In an attempt to catch Joe Sacerdote (Deptford, N.J.) off third base for the double play, an errant throw allowed him to score the go-ahead run.

Stockton then tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth as Chris Discher (Cherry Hill, N.J.) doubled home pinch runner Matt Allen (Salem, N.J.).

Kean stranded 11 runners in the nightcap.

Offensively, Discher was 3-for-4 while Paras was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

For the Cougars, junior Maikel De La Rosa (Newark, N.J.) was 1-for-3 with two RBI while Schatzow finished with two hits and an RBI.

Freshman Joe Mihalyi (Hamilton, N.J.) earned the win for the Ospreys.  Mihalyi (3-1) tossed six innings allowing four runs, two earned, and eight hits.  Freshman John O'Hara (Clayton, N.J.) earned his fourth save by pitching three innings of shutout ball, allowing just one hit.

Junior Andy Cupido (South Plainfield, N.J.) took the loss for Kean.  Cupido (1-2) allowed 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings.  He also fanned seven and walked one.

Kean will host Centenary College in a rescheduled non-conference game this Tuesday, April 24th at 3:30 p.m. at Jim Hynes Stadium.
