One Two Punch Sends Kean Past Rowan in NJAC Baseball Doubleheader Action

Glassboro, N.J. (4/7/07) - Seniors Joe Augustine (Highland Park, N.J.) and Dan Zeffiro (Old Bridge, N.J.) each tossed complete games as #7 Kean University swept Rowan University, 7-2 & 3-1, Saturday afternoon in Glassboro, N.J.

With the wins the Cougars improve to 17-3 overall and 6-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.  The Profs fall to 11-11 and 3-4 in conference play.

In game one, Kean jumped on the board early, plating five runs in the first inning aided by two Rowan miscues.  Junior Derek Gianakas (Edison, N.J.) had an RBI single, while designated hitter Mike Shymanski (Edison, N.J.) drove in two with a single.

Kean then tacked on two more runs in the third inning as Gianakas crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly from senior Perry Schatzow (Ocean Twp., N.J.) while Shymanski recorded his third RBI of the day with a groundout.

The Profs broke up the shutout in the bottom of the eighth inning with two runs with an RBI groundout and RBI single.

Augustine improved to 4-1 with the complete game win.  Augustine, who held the Profs hitless through seven and a third innings, allowed just two runs and four hits.  He also struck out eight and walked five in the un-spring weather.

Offensively Gianakas was 3-for-4 in game one while senior Aaron Richard (Plainfield, N.J.) recorded his 200th career hit.  Richard recently broke the Kean all-time hit mark of 195.

In game two, Schatzow got things going with a two RBI double to right-center in the top of the second inning to give Kean a 2-0 lead.  Rowan cut the lead to one in the fourth as Tom Ready (Blenheim, N.J.) recorded an RBI groundout.  The Cougars added an insurance run in the eighth as centerfielder Joe D'Andrea (Hamilton, N.J.) drove home catcher Kevin O'Neill (Union, N.J.).

Zeffiro (4-1) earned the win with a complete game performance.  He allowed one run and seven hits while also fanning seven and walking two.

At the plate, Richard was 2-for-4 while junior Ryan Clark (Livingston, N.J) was 3-for-3.

Kean returns to action on Monday, April 9th as they travel to Staten Island, N.Y. to take on the College of Staten Island, first pitch slated for 3 p.m.
