One Two Punch Sends Kean Past Rowan in NJAC

Augustine (Highland Park, N.J.) and Dan Zeffiro
(Old Bridge, N.J.) each tossed complete games as #7 Kean
University swept Rowan University, 7-2 & 3-1, Saturday
afternoon in Glassboro, N.J.
With the wins the Cougars improve to 17-3 overall and 6-1 in the
New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Profs fall to 11-11 and
3-4 in conference play.
In game one, Kean jumped on the board early, plating five runs
in the first inning aided by two Rowan miscues. Junior
Derek Gianakas (Edison, N.J.) had an RBI single,
while designated hitter Mike Shymanski (Edison,
N.J.) drove in two with a single.
Kean then tacked on two more runs in the third inning as
Gianakas crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly from senior
Perry Schatzow (Ocean Twp., N.J.) while Shymanski
recorded his third RBI of the day with a groundout.
The Profs broke up the shutout in the bottom of the eighth
inning with two runs with an RBI groundout and RBI single.
Augustine improved to 4-1 with the complete game win.
Augustine, who held the Profs hitless through seven and a third
innings, allowed just two runs and four hits. He also struck
out eight and walked five in the un-spring weather.
Offensively Gianakas was 3-for-4 in game one while senior
Aaron Richard (Plainfield, N.J.) recorded his
200th career hit. Richard recently broke the Kean
all-time hit mark of 195.
In game two, Schatzow got things going with a two RBI double to
right-center in the top of the second inning to give Kean a 2-0
lead. Rowan cut the lead to one in the fourth as Tom
Ready (Blenheim, N.J.) recorded an RBI groundout.
The Cougars added an insurance run in the eighth as
centerfielder Joe D'Andrea (Hamilton, N.J.) drove
home catcher Kevin O'Neill (Union, N.J.).
Zeffiro (4-1) earned the win with a complete game
performance. He allowed one run and seven hits while also
fanning seven and walking two.
At the plate, Richard was 2-for-4 while junior Ryan
Clark (Livingston, N.J) was 3-for-3.
Kean returns to action on Monday, April 9th as they
travel to Staten Island, N.Y. to take on the College of Staten
Island, first pitch slated for 3 p.m.
