Dolphins Swim Past Cougars In Non-Conference Action, 6-5

Staten Island, N.Y. (4/9/07) - Senior Michael Sosa (Texas) tossed five innings to earn his first win of the season as the College of Staten Island defeated Kean University, 6-5, Monday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at the CSI Baseball Complex.

Sosa (1-1), who appeared in his first start of the season, allowed four runs and five hits while walking six and striking out three.

Offensively junior Derek Gianakas (Edison, N.J.) was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI for Kean, who suffers their first non-conference loss since March 15th at Chapman University.

The Cougars got things going plating two runs in the top of the first as Gianakas doubled home senior Perry Schatzow (Ocean Twp., N.J.) and freshman Chris Carrano (Lincoln Park, N.J.).

The Dolphins answered right back and scored three runs in the bottom of the inning.  Devon DiCasoli (Staten Island, N.Y.) tied things up with a two RBI single to leftfield.  After stealing second, DiCasoli was brought home on an RBI single by Matt Thompson (Staten Island, N.Y.).

CSI would go on to tack on single runs in the bottom of the second and third to raise their lead to 5-2.

Kean pulled within one in the top of the sixth inning as Ryan Clark (Livingston, N.J.) doubled home Aaron Richard (Plainfield, N.J.) to make the score 5-4.

The Dolphins added an important insurance run in the bottom of the inning, aided by a Cougar miscue.  Senior Bob Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y.) came across the plate on a sacrifice fly by DiCasoli for a 6-4 advantage.

The Cougars rallied for one more run in the eighth as Clark delivered a sacrifice fly of his own, but that would be as close as they would get.

Freshman Nick Nolan (Linden, N.J.) suffered the loss in his first start of the year.  Nolan (0-1) allowed four runs and four hits in one and two thirds innings.

Schatzow finished the afternoon with a 3-for-5 performance while Clark was 1-for-2 with two RBI.

The Cougars will look to turn things around on Tuesday, April 10th as they take on St. Joseph's College-Long Island.  First pitch of a doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m.
