Williams' Free Throws Lift Kean Over
Baruch, 71-67
New York, N.Y. (1/5/08) - Freshman
Keith Williams (Jersey City, N.J.) led the Cougars
with 24 points, including four straight free-throws in the final
four seconds of action to break a 67-67 tie and give Kean
University a 71-67 victory over host Baruch College Saturday
afternoon.
The win snaps a three game skid for KU (4-8). Baruch falls
to 4-9 with the loss.
The Cougars controlled most of the first half and led by as many
as nine with 3:35 remaining as junior Shavon Hogges
(Paterson, N.J.) (pictured left) nailed his second
three-pointer up-to-that point to give KU a 28-19 lead. Going
into the break with a six point advantage (31-25), Williams tallied
eight points and seven rebounds.
With 17:45 remaining in the second half, freshman
Akinwande Oshodi (Florence, N.J.) gave the Cougars
another nine point advantage (38-29), but the Bearcats responded
and surged with a 16-0 run over the next three and a half minutes
to give Baruch their second lead of the game at 45-38. Kean
would remain close in the final ten minutes of action, but poured
on the pressure with under five minutes on the clock forcing five
turnovers. Yasien Beatty (Jersey City, N.J.)
put KU up by two with 56 seconds left with a layup but Baruch
responded with a bucket of their own tying the game with 36 seconds
on the clock. Williams sealed the win with four straight
points from the charity stripe, his only attempts of the day.
Williams finished the afternoon with 24 points as well as nine
rebounds and seven steals while Oshodi added nine points.
Kean returns to conference action on Wednesday, January
9th as they travel to Rutgers-Camden for an 8 p.m.
matchup.
