Kean Cruises in Opening
Round of Legg Mason Winter Classic
STEVENSON, Md. (1/05/07) – Junior guard
Melissa Beyruti (Union City, N.J.) paced five
players in double-figures with 25 points to lead the Kean
University women's basketball team to a 106-52 victory over
Penn State-Berks in the first round of the 10th Annual
Legg Mason Winter Classic at Villa Julia College on Saturday
afternoon.
Beyruti (pictured right) connected on five
three-pointers and added five assists and four steals as the No. 13
Cougars won their 10th game of the season (10-1).
Kean closed the first half on a 12-2 run to
take a 19-point lead at halftime behind 18 points by Beyruti and 10
points from rookie Tiffany Patrick (Piscataway,
N.J.).
In the second half, Kean built a 33-point advantage with just under
10 minutes remaining following a 14-1 run and a 22-1 run to in the
final seven minutes of the game gave the Cougars their largest lead
at the final buzzer with their 54-point margin of victory.
Freshman guard Brittany Powell (Tinton
Falls, N.J.) (pictured left) hit 8-of-12 shots from the
floor to score 18 points in 12 minutes of action off the
bench. Patrick and sophomore guard
Cardiss Jackman (Tobyhanna, Pa.) scored 14 and 12
points, respectively, while senior center Chari'
Cooper (Paulsboro, N.J.) added 11 points, seven rebounds
and four assists in 12 minutes.
The Cougars forced Penn State-Berks into 37
turnovers leading to 45 Kean points, as all 13 Kean players
recorded at least one steal.
Kean faces host Villa Julie in the
championship game tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
