Oquendo, Baison Lift Men's Soccer in Double Overtime, 2-1

NEWARK, N.J. (10/18/08) - With just 16 seconds remaining in double overtime, junior Sebastian Baison (Hillside, N.J.) netted the game-winning goal to lift the Kean University men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over host Rutgers-Newark on Saturday evening.

The victory snapped a nine-game losing streak for the Cougars (5-10-1, 1-6 NJAC), while Rutgers-Newark (9-8, 0-6 NJAC) lost their third straight conference game by one goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Alfredo Oquendo (North Plainfield, N.J.) made 12 saves in the victory, including on a penalty kick in the first overtime to preserve the tie at the time.

Trailing 1-0, the Cougars tied the game in the 78th minute, when freshman Mikhail Kholodenko (East Brunswick, N.J.) (pictured right) scored off the assist from freshman Mark Cifelli (Essex Fells, N.J.).

After playing through a scoreless first overtime, the two teams appeared headed to a tie when Baison took a hard shot from the middle of the box following a blocked shot from freshman midfielder Victor Bellido (Elizabeth, N.J.) to give the Cougars their first NJAC win of the season.

Rutgers-Newark took the lead early in the second half, as sophomore Innocent Buule (West New York, N.J.) netted the game's first goal off the pass from senior Joe Caamano (Linden, N.J.) in the 56th minute.

The Scarlet Raiders had an opportunity to extend the lead on a penalty kick in the 77th minute, however Oquendo (pictured left) stopped the shot and the Cougars carried the momentum down the field, scoring just 1:34 later to tie the game.

The Cougars return to action on Wednesday, October 22, when they travel to Albright College for a non-conference game at 7 p.m.
