Men's Soccer Falls in Overtime to William Paterson, 1-0

UNION, N.J. (10/4/08) - Sophomore Alfredo Oquendo recorded double-digit saves for the third time in the last four games, however the Kean University men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 overtime decision to undefeated and 14th-ranked William Paterson University in New Jersey Athletic Conference action.

William Paterson sophomore back Steve DeMatteo (Piscataway, N.J. ) scored the game-winning goal with just 49 seconds remaining in the first overtime to lift the Pioneers (9-0-2, 4-0-1 NJAC) to a 1-0 victory.   For the Cougars (4-8-1, 0-5-0), it was their sixth game of the year against a nationally-ranked opponent, including the third straight game in NJAC play.

Oquendo (pictured right) stopped 10 shots for the Cougars, giving him 75 saves for the season and moving him into fifth place in single season history.

On the game-winner, the Pioneers forced a corner kicks with just under a minute remaining in the first overtime and sophomore Julian Valerio (Manalapan, N.J.) delivered the ball into the box, where sophomore Joe Strawman (Ringoes, N.J.) headed the ball and DeMatteo knocked it in from the left side for the game-winner.

The Pioneers held an 18-13 advantage in shots, including a 10-2 edge in the first half, while also taking seven corner kicks to Kean's one.

Junior goalkeeper Dan Peragallo (North Brunswick, N.J.) made four saves in the victory.

The Cougars return to action on Saturday, October 11, when they host #12 Stevens Institute of Technology at 1 p.m.
