Men's Soccer Falls in Overtime to
William Paterson, 1-0
UNION, N.J. (10/4/08) - Sophomore
Alfredo Oquendo recorded double-digit saves for
the third time in the last four games, however the Kean University
men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 overtime decision to undefeated and
14th-ranked William Paterson University in New Jersey
Athletic Conference action.
William Paterson sophomore back Steve DeMatteo (Piscataway,
N.J. ) scored the game-winning
goal with just 49 seconds remaining in the first overtime to lift
the Pioneers (9-0-2, 4-0-1 NJAC) to a 1-0 victory. For
the Cougars (4-8-1, 0-5-0), it was their sixth game of the year
against a nationally-ranked opponent, including the third straight
game in NJAC play.
Oquendo (pictured right) stopped 10 shots for the Cougars,
giving him 75 saves for the season and moving him into fifth place
in single season history.
On the game-winner, the Pioneers forced a corner kicks with just
under a minute remaining in the first overtime and sophomore
Julian Valerio (Manalapan, N.J.) delivered the ball into
the box, where sophomore Joe Strawman (Ringoes, N.J.)
headed the ball and DeMatteo knocked it in from the left side for
the game-winner.
The Pioneers held an 18-13 advantage in shots, including a 10-2
edge in the first half, while also taking seven corner kicks to
Kean's one.
Junior goalkeeper Dan Peragallo (North Brunswick,
N.J.) made four saves in the victory.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday, October 11, when they
host #12 Stevens Institute of Technology at 1 p.m.
