Baldwin-Wallace in Cougar Classic
UNION, N.J. (11/16/08) - In a battle of highly
ranked preseason favorites, junior Cardiss Jackman
(Tobyhanna, Pa.) scored a game-high 24 points to lead the
Kean University women's basketball team to an 81-68 victory over
Baldwin-Wallace College in THE ROCK Cougar Classic presented by
Marriott championship game on Sunday evening.
The third-ranked Cougars (2-0) erased an eight point deficit in
the second half and outscored the eighth-ranked Yellow Jackets
(1-1) 20-7 in the final 7:25 of the game. Junior
Danielle Brown (North Brunswick, N.J.) (pictured
left) earned tournament most valuable player honors after finishing
with 13 points, eight rebounds and four steals, while playing 38
minutes in the championship game.
Sophomore Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove, Ohio) led
Baldwin-Wallace with 21 points, as she hit 11-of-12 from the free
throw line.
The Cougars took a six-point lead nearly halfway through the
opening half, before Baldwin-Wallace used a 10-2 run to take a
35-38 lead with 38 seconds remaining in the half. Jackman
(pictured right) trimmed the deficit back to four points heading
into intermission when she hit a three-pointer with 17 seconds left
to pull Kean within 35-31 at halftime.
Jackman finished with 14 points in the first half, as she hit
all three of her three point attempts. For the Yellow
Jackets, Schroeder had 10 points and four rebounds in just 11
minutes of action in the first half.
In the second half, the Yellow Jackets extended the lead back
out to seven points on five different occasions, the last at 53-46
on a three-pointer by senior guard Rachel Quiring (Brunswick,
Ohio) with 14:36 remaining.
The Cougars used a 10-3 run to tie the game at 56-56 on a lay-up
by senior guard Melissa Beyruti (Union City, N.J.)
and would take the lead for good on a pair of free throws by
Beyruti with 7:25 left in the game.
Beyruti finished with 20 points and five steals for the Cougars,
while freshman Danielle McFadden (Brooklyn, N.Y.)
added eight points and seven rebounds in the victory.
For the Yellow Jackets, senior guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma,
Ohio) also finished in double-figures with 11 points, while
sophomore Courtney Ritzler (Fostoria, Ohio) came off the
bench to score 10 points in 13 points.
In the consolation game, Delaware Valley College defeated
Salisbury University, 81-59, behind a game-high 25 points from
sophomore Brittany Battinieri (Eddystone, Pa.). and 20 points
from junior Kim Vennera (Norristown, Pa.).
After the Sea Gulls opened the game on a 9-0 run, Delaware
Valley used a 16-4 run to take a 16-13 lead about midway through
the first half. The Aggies eventually closed the half on a
9-2 run to build a double-digit lead at halftime (41-31).
In the second half, Delaware Valley led by as many as 24 points
en-route to the 81-59 victory.
For Salisbury, junior Janay Johnson (Baltimore, Md.) led three
players in double figures with 16 points and eight rebounds.
Freshman Meghan Dunn (Olney, Md.) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
