Rutgers-Newark Defeats Men's

NEWARK, N.J. (12/06/08) -
Junior Dean Hughes (Pemberton Twp., N.J.) tied for
game-high honors with 11 points, however the Kean University men's
basketball team dropped a 72-53 decision to host Rutgers-Newark in
New Jersey Athletic Conference action on Saturday evening.
Sophomore Jonathan Jones (Linden, N.J.) added
10 points for the Cougars (3-5, 0-2 NJAC), while junior Tim
Smith (Mullica Hill, N.J.) scored 11 points for the Scarlet
Raiders (6-1, 2-0 NJAC).
Rutgers-Newark opened the game on a 29-10 run, as Smith netted
seven of his points in the first nine minutes of action, as eight
different Scarlet Raiders scored during the spurt
.
The Cougars trimmed the deficit to 14 points at 38-24 following
a 6-0 run that was capped by Jones (pictured right), however
Rutgers-Newark junior Deshawn Singleton (Passaic, N.J.)
knocked down a 10-foot buzzer beater to extend the halftime lead to
40-24.
In the second half, the Cougars got as close as 12 points
following a tip-in by Hughes to pull Kean to within 44-32 with
15:01 remaining, however the Scarlet Raiders extended the lead to
as many as 23 points en-route to the victory.
Kean sophomore Akinwande Oshodi (Florence,
N.J.) finished with a team-high eight rebounds, while
adding six points and two steals.
For Rutgers-Newark, junior forward Phil Barnes (Middlesex,
N.J.) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Cougars have a week off before traveling to Moravian College
to face the host Greyhounds in non-conference action on Saturday,
December 13, at 2 p.m.
