Red Hawks Push Past Kean, 8-1

Little Falls, N.J. (3/27/08) - Senior lefthander Kevin Dalton (Edison, N.J.) threw eight scoreless innings as Montclair State defeated #3/9 Kean University, 8-1, in the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener for both teams at Yogi Berra Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

Senior Dan Mattonelli (Hamilton, N.J.) was 2-for-2 for the Cougars in the loss (15-5, 0-1 NJAC).

Senior Lou Politan (Livingston, N.J.) had three hits as Montclair State (1-0 NJAC) moved to 6-7 on the season.  

Montclair State took a 2-0 lead in the second as Stephen Piscitello (Hauppague, N.Y.) reached on an error to start the inning and Jeff Miller (Wyckoff, N.J.) followed with another base hit before Rob Clark (Livingston, N.J.) hit a single into left field scoring Piscitello with the game's first run. After a flyout, Andrew Himmelfarb (Nyack, N.Y.) singled to center bringing home Miller for the two-run MSU advantage.

The Red Hawks broke the game open in the sixth as the first six batters all reached on hits. In the inning Montclair built a seven-run cushion.

KU broke up the shutout in the top of the ninth as senior Derek Gianakas (Edison, N.J.) led off the inning with a double.  After advancing to third on a wild pitch, pinch-hitter Jared Orgel (East Hanover, N.J.) grounded out to bring across Kean's only run.

With the win, Dalton moved to 3-0 this season. He gave up seven hits, struck out five and walked just one. Senior righthander Colin Feneis (Spotswood, N.J.) took the loss for the Cougars as he surrendered five runs (three earned) and 10 hits in five innings. Feneis (1-2) fanned three and issued one walk.

Kean will return to conference action on Friday, March 28th at 3 p.m. as they travel to take on Rutgers-Newark.
