Second-Half Surge Propels
Women's Soccer Past FDU-Florham, 3-0
UNION, N.J. (9/3/08) - Rookie Ashley
DiRocco (Cranford, N.J.) broke a scoreless tie with two
goals in a seven minute span to lead the Kean University women's
soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson University
College at Florham on Wednesday evening.
Tied after the opening half, DiRocco got the Cougars (2-1) on
board in the 57 minute, taking a pass from freshman Leigha
Czerwinski (Neptune, N.J.) for the 1-0 lead. Just
6:33 later,
DiRocco scored unassisted, gathering a loose ball at the top of
the box and scoring for the two-goal advantage.
The Cougars added the insurance tally late in the game, when
freshman Danielle Esposito (Holmdel, N.J.)
(pictured right) scored off the assist from junior Kayla
Duncan (Edison, N.J.) with just 1:25 remaining.
Kean held a 28-7 edge in shots over the Devils (0-1), while also
having a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
For the Devils, goalkeeper Melanie Pierson (Brookside,
N.J.) made 10 saves, while Cougar keepers Leandra
Russo (Galloway, N.J.) and Nicole Groszew
(Denville, N.J.) each stopped two shots.
