Women's Soccer Falls Short at
WestConn, 2-1
DANBURY, Conn. (10/20/09) - Western Connecticut
State University senior forward Kelli Veras (Trumbull,
Conn.) scored twice to lift the Colonials over Kean
University, 2-1, in non-conference women's soccer action on Tuesday
evening.
For the Cougars (6-5-4), senior midfielder Jenna Godwin
(Kingwood, N.J.) notched the team's only goal of the
game.
Despite being outshot 11-4 in the opening half, the Colonials
(8-8) took a 1-0 lead with less than eight minutes remaining in the
opening half when Veras maneuvered through the Kean defense and
fired the cross-cage shot for the lead at the break.
In the second half, Veras tacked on the key insurance goal in
the 67th minute to extend the lead to 2-0 when she
scored off the assist from junior Jennifer Duran (Uncasville,
Conn.).
The Cougars cut the deficit in half 12 minutes later when Godwin
(pictured right) scored off the assist from rookie
Carly Seidel (Winslow Twp., N.J.) for her fifth
goal of the season.
Junior goalkeeper Leandra Russo (Galloway,
N.J.) made two saves for Kean.
Kean held a 28-7 edge in shots and 6-3 advantage in corner
kicks.
The Cougar host Richard Stockton College in a key New Jersey
Athletic Conference game on Saturday, October 24, at 6 p.m.
