Triano's Hat Trick Not Enough as
Field Hockey Falls to TCNJ, 4-3
EWING, N.J. (10/27/09) - Sophomore
Olivia Triano (Keyport, N.J.) recorded the hat
trick and tied the game late, before The College of New Jersey
scored with just 33 seconds remaining to defeat Kean University,
4-3, in New Jersey Athletic Conference field hockey action on
Tuesday evening.
Senior Gabby Cafone (Fairfield, N.J.) scored the
game-winner for the 12th ranked Lions (8-5, 4-1 NJAC),
as TCNJ held a 20-8 advantage in shots and 20-5 edge in penalty
corners.
For the Cougars (10-4, 2-3 NJAC), Triano (pictured right)
recorded her second hat trick of the season, as she scored on three
of her four shots.
Triano opened the game scoring just 5:45 into the contest to
give the Cougars the early 1-0 lead. TCNJ tied the game less
than 10 minutes later when junior Jessica Falcone (Cherry Hill,
N.J.) knocked in a rebound to tie things up at one goal
apiece.
The game remained tied at halftime, as Kean goalkeeper
Lauren Dobbs (Palmyra, N.J.) denied TCNJ on a
penalty stroke with less than 15 minutes remaining in the half to
preserve the 1-1 tie at the break.
In the second half, Triano had an answer for TCNJ's first two
goals, first scoring just two minutes after TCNJ's Mary Waller
(Bel Air, Md.) gave the Lions a 2-1 early in the half.
Cafone would give TCNJ a 3-2 lead with less than 9 minutes
remaining, before Triano again knotted the game up when she scored
her 14th goal of the season with just 3:08 remaining in
regulation.
For the Cougars, Dobbs (pictured left) made 10 saves, while
sophomore Shanna Syciarz (Garwood, N.J.) stopped three
shots for the Lions.
