Men's Soccer Closes Out Season With
1-0 Win Over Ramapo
UNION, N.J. (10/28/09) - The Kean University
men's soccer team closed out the 2009 season with a 1-0
victory over Ramapo College in New Jersey Athletic Conference
action on Wednesday evening.
Rookie Abner Denis (Curitiba, Brazil) knocked
in the game-winner for the Cougars (7-8-4, 2-6-1 NJAC). For
the Roadrunners (10-5-2, 3-5-1), senior goalkeeper IanTighe
(Wyckoff, N.J.) finished with five saves.
After a scoreless first half, Denis took a direct kick from the far
sideline that deflected off a Ramapo defender and into the net for
game's only goal.
The Cougars held off a Ramapo offensive attack late in the game
to hold on for the win in the final game for the team's two
seniors, Robby Sopko (Lake Como, N.J.) (pictured
right) and Pedro Zamora (New Brunswick,
N.J.) (pictured left).
Kean held a slight 14-12 edge in shots, while the Roadrunners
doubled the Cougars up in corner kicks, 8-4.
For Kean, sophomore Brian Haines (Ridgefield Park,
N.J.) made six saves in the win.
The Cougar victory knocked Ramapo out of a possible NJAC playoff
spot, as the Roadrunners now await a possible bid to the Eastern
College Athletic Conference Metro Region tournament.
