Men's Soccer Closes Out Season With 1-0 Win Over Ramapo

UNION, N.J. (10/28/09) - The Kean University men's soccer team closed out the 2009  season with a 1-0 victory over Ramapo College in New Jersey Athletic Conference action on Wednesday evening.

Rookie Abner Denis (Curitiba, Brazil) knocked in the game-winner for the Cougars (7-8-4, 2-6-1 NJAC).  For the Roadrunners (10-5-2, 3-5-1), senior goalkeeper IanTighe (Wyckoff, N.J.) finished with five saves.

After a scoreless first half, Denis took a direct kick from the far sideline that deflected off a Ramapo defender and into the net for game's only goal.

The Cougars held off a Ramapo offensive attack late in the game to hold on for the win in the final game for the team's two seniors, Robby Sopko (Lake Como, N.J.) (pictured right) and Pedro Zamora  (New Brunswick, N.J.) (pictured left).

Kean held a slight 14-12 edge in shots, while the Roadrunners doubled the Cougars up in corner kicks, 8-4.

For Kean, sophomore Brian Haines (Ridgefield Park, N.J.) made six saves in the win.

The Cougar victory knocked Ramapo out of a possible NJAC playoff spot, as the Roadrunners now await a possible bid to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Metro Region tournament.
