Bermudez Paces Women's Hoops Past DeSales, 71-59

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. (12/8/09) - Junior forward Angelica Bermudez (Belleville, N.J.) scored a season-high 20 points and added eight rebounds and three assists to lead #7 Kean University to a 71-59 victory over host DeSales Univerity in non-conference women's basketball action on Tuesday evening.

Bermudez (pictured right) connected on 9-of-11 shots from the floor, as she grabbed five offensive boards for the Cougars (6-1).

For the Bulldogs (3-4), junior Lori Lidlow (Toms River, N.J.) scored 20 points and added four assists.

DeSales opened an 11-8 lead before Kean senior guard Melissa Beyruti (Union City, N.J.) capped a 13-0 Kean run, giving the Cougars the 21-11 lead with 9:37 remaining in the opening half.  The Bulldogs answered right back with a 12-0 run of their own to regain the lead at 23-21 less than four minutes later, before Kean closed the half with a 6-2 run to hold a 33-32 lead at the break.

After a sluggish start to the second half, sophomore Brittany Powell (Tinton Falls, N.J.) broke 39-39 tie and would give the Cougars the lead for good with a three-pointer with 14:30 remaining.  The Cougars then went on to score 10 straight points in a 63-second span, as they built a 56-43 lead with 11:27 to go, as rookie Nicol Biesek (South Pasadena, Calif.) (pictured left) opened the run with a pair of free throws and capped it with a jumper for the 13-point lead.

The Cougars extended the lead to as many as 16 points on a pair of occasions and DeSales could pull no closer than nine points the rest of the way, as Kean won its sixth straight game.

Freshman Naimah Clemons (Newark, N.J.) scored 13 points and had three steals and two assists, while junior Tiffany Patrick (Piscataway, N.J.) added a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

For the Bulldogs, freshman Colleen Gavin (Quakertown, Pa.) had 16 points and five rebounds off the bench.

The Cougars return to action on Monday, December 14, when they travel to #11/13 University of Scranton for a non-conference game at 7 p.m.
