Patrick Propels Kean to NCAA Second
Round
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (3/6/09) - Sophomore forward
Tiffany Patrick (Piscataway, N.J.)
scored a career-high 24 points and added 17 rebounds,
seven steals and five blocks to lead the Kean University to a 74-60
victory over Marymount University in the opening round of the NCAA
Division III Women's Basketball tournament on Friday evening at the
Louis Alexander Palestra on the campus of University of
Rochester.
The Cougars, who are making their 13th NCAA
Tournament appearance, posted their fourth straight opening round
victory and advance to the second round, where they face the winner
of the Widener University/University of Rochester game for a trip
to the Sweet Sixteen.
Senior guard Ebony Jackson (Newark, N.J.)
(pictured right) added 12 points and eight assists for the Cougars
(22-7), while the Saints (20-7) were led by junior forward
Kathleen Brown (Bethesday, Md.), who finished with 18
points and a game-high 21 rebounds.
In the first half, the Cougars opened a double-digit lead at
17-6 following a lay-up by Jackson eight minutes into the
game. The Cougars again led by 10 points on three more
occasions, the last at 25-15 with just under seven minutes to go in
the half, before the Saints used a 9-2 run to pull within 34-33
with a chance to tie the game with a free throw.
The Cougars rebounded the missed free throw and Patrick (pictured
left) converted a three-point play and junior Cardiss
Jackman (Tobyhanna, Pa.) added a jumper at the buzzer to
close the half on a 5-0 run and extend the lead to 39-33 at
halftime.
The Cougars quickly extended the lead out to 13 points at 46-33
with the first seven points of the second half and the led by as
many as 18 points on a pair of occasions, including 61-43 advantage
with 10:33 to go in the game.
Marymount was able to trim the deficit back to single digits at
65-56, but Kean answered with back-to-back baskets and the Saints
could get no closer than 11 points the rest of the way, as Kean
moves to the second-round with the 14-point victory.
Junior forward Danielle Brown (North Brunswick,
N.J.) finished with 11 points, five rebounds and three
steals, while Jackman finished with nine points. Junior
Alysha Taylor (Absegami, N.J.) scored eight points
and sophomore Angelica Bermudez (Belleville, N.J.)
added six points and seven rebounds off the bench.
For Marymount, sophomore guard Amanda Billy (Syracuse,
N.Y.) finished with 11 points.
