Women's Lacrosse Falls to MSU
UNION, N.J. (4/18/09) - Montclair State
University sophomore attack Kayla Henderson (Landing,
N.J.) scored a game-high five goals to lead the Red Hawks to a
21-6 victory over host Kean University in New Jersey Athletic
Conference and Skyline Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
Senior attack Stephanie Cirino (Warminster,
Pa.) and rookie Nicole Torre (Toms Rivers,
N.J.) each had two goals for the Cougars (6-8 overall, 4-1
Skyline, 1-3 NJAC). Junior midfielder Morgan MacPhee
(Toms Rivers, N.J.) had four goals and two assists for the Red
Hawks (5-8 overall, 4-1 Skyline, 1-1 NJAC).
The Red Hawks scored the first nine goals of the game, as
sophomore attack Meghan Spitzer (Mount Olive, N.J.) netted
four goals in that opening run.
Kean junior Julie Bachovchin (Piscataway, N.J.)
got the Cougars on the board with a free
position shot with 11:35 remaining in the opening half, and Kean
netted two more goals to trim the deficit to 9-3 with just under
five minutes to go in the half. The Red Hawks responded with
four unanswered goals the rest of the half to take a 13-3 lead at
halftime, as Henderson scored three times in the final 3:38 of the
half.
The Cougars scored the first goal of the second half, as
freshman Heather Murphy (Brick, N.J.) tallied the
free position shot to trim the lead back to single digits
(13-4). However, Montclair State reeled off seven straight
goals to extend the lead to 20-4 en-route to the 21-6 win.
Cirino (pictured right) picked up three draw controls and two
groundballs, while junior Chelsea Davis (Livingston,
N.J.) had a team-high four groundballs and four caused
turnovers.
Freshman midfielder Cora Delfini (New Egypt, N.J.)
added three goals, three assists and four caused turnovers for MSU,
while senior midfielder Marykate DiBenedetto (Cinnaminson,
N.J.) had two goals and two assists.
In goal, sophomore Tracey Manella (Hawthorne, N.J.) and
freshman Christina Crossin (Milford, Conn.) split time and
combined for nine saves for the Red Hawks. Rookie
Gina Petrizzo (Hopatcong, N.J.) made eight saves
in 52 minutes of action for Kean.
The Cougars host College of Mount Saint Vincent in the final
regular season home game in Skyline Conference action on Wednesday,
April 22, at 7 p.m.
