Moceri Has Record Setting Day As Kean Claims NJAC Regular Season Title

Moceri Has Record Setting Day as Kean Claims NJAC Regular Season Title

Ewing, N.J. (4/25/09) - Junior Mike Moceri (Yardville, N.J.) became the new single-season record holder for hits in a season at Kean with 73 as Kean University claimed their third straight regular season NJAC title with a twinbill sweep of The College of New Jersey, 9-7 and 5-4, Saturday afternoon.

Moceri was a combined 3-for-8 with a double.  Moceri breaks the record of 72 previously held by first baseman Aaron Richard during the 2006 season.

Kean improves to 32-7 overall and 15-3 in conference play with the sweep.

Game One

The College of NJ took control in the early going, plating two runs in the second and single runs in the third and fourth for an early 4-0 lead.  Mike Galeotafiore (Brick, N.J.) recorded an RBI double in the second while senior Jeff Toth (Parlin, N.J.) added a solo shot in the third.  Senior Adam Tussey (Brooklawn, N.J.) had an RBI single in the fourth.

The Cougars then took the lead for good with nine runs in their half of the sixth.  KU loaded the bases with no outs as Moceri and freshman Dylan Laguna (Edison, N.J.) started off the inning with singles, followed by a walk by freshman Lee Cavico (North Brunswick, N.J.).  Sophomore Gabe Ramirez (North Bergen, N.J.) then hit a single to left, driving in two.  Later in the inning, freshman D.J. Breckenridge (Fair Haven, N.J.) recorded a two RBI single of his own.  After an RBI single by freshman Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J.), Laguna came up to bat for the second time in the frame and launched his second homerun of the year, a three run blast.

TCNJ chipped away with two runs in the seventh and a single run in the eighth, but reliever Brandon Aich (Sayreville, N.J.) closed the door in the ninth to preserve the 9-7 win.

Rookie southpaw Ryan Zamorsky (Branchburg, N.J.) picked up the win.  Zamorsky (6-1) tossed five and two thirds innings allowing four runs, two earned, with two walks and two strikeouts.

Offensively Laguna was 3-for-5 with three RBI, while Moceri and Gibbons collected two hits apiece.

Game Two

Kean jumped on board first with two runs in the top of the second, aided by a Lions' miscue.  After TCNJ got one back in the bottom of the inning, the Cougars would proceed to score single runs in the next three innings to go ahead, 5-1.  Moceri picked up his record-breaking hit in the top of the fifth, with a single.

The Lions pulled within two, scoring two in the bottom of the seventh with two outs.  Toth got things going with an RBI single and James Ruzich (Verona, N.J.) scored after a Cougar miscue.  TCNJ inched closer with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the eighth.

But senior Pedro Rivera (Elizabeth, N.J.) earned his first save of the year as he tossed one and a third innings of shutout ball to seal the win.

Senior Colin Feneis (Spotswood, N.J.) improved to (4-1) after tossing six strong innings allowing just one run and six hits.

Kean will be the top seed in the upcoming NJAC tournament and will be home on Tuesday, April 28th at 3:30 p.m.
