Baseball Pushes Past Farmingdale, 8-3

Union, N.J. (5/9/09) - Freshman Dylan Laguna (Edison, N.J.) drove in a game-high three as #10/13 Kean University defeated visiting Farmingdale State College, 8-3, Saturday afternoon at Jim Hynes Stadium.

The win improves the Cougars to 34-9 overall and concludes all regular season competition.  The loss drops the Rams to 26-14.  The Rams already earned the Skyline Conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.  Kean will play the waiting game as the brackets are announced Monday morning.

Kean got all the runs they would need in the bottom of the first.  Rookie Vinny Galya (Old Bridge, N.J.) and junior Mike Moceri (Yardville, N.J.) started things off with back-to-back walks.  After moving up one base a piece on a wild pitch, Laguna (pictured right) singled them both home with a hit through the right side.  Freshman Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J.) drove in Laguna with an RBI single of his own later in the inning to give Kean a 3-0 lead.

The Rams responded with a single run in the top of the second as junior Vinny Block (Mineola, N.Y.) hit an RBI triple with one out.

KU put the game out of reach with two runs in the bottom of the frame and another in the bottom of the third.  Freshman Nick Ramagli (Emerson, N.J.) provided an RBI single while Moceri added one of his own.  Junior Dave Zavistoski (Edison, N.J.) recorded an RBI single for the lone run in the third.

The Cougars used nine pitchers in today's contest, after being off from competition for a week.  Senior Kyle Murphy (East Hanover, N.J.) picked up the win.  Murphy (1-1) (pictured left) tossed one and two thirds innings allowing just one unearned run and one hit.  He pitched out of an early jam in the top of the first as he entered the game with bases loaded and one out.  He induced a double play to get out of the inning.

Offensively Moceri was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.  For the Rams, junior Frank Yera (Manhattan, N.Y.) and Rich Gili (Manorville, N.Y.) each had two hits.
