Women's Soccer Falls in Opener, 2-1

PURCHASE, N.Y. (9/1/09) - The Kean University women's soccer team came up short in the 2009 season opener, as the Cougars fell to host Manhattanville College, 2-1, on Wednesday evening.

Trailing 2-0 with less than eight minutes remaining, the Cougars pulled within one goal and had a pair of corner kicks in the final two minutes, but were unable to tie the game.

Senior Kathryn Moore (Pearl River, N.Y.) got the Valiants on the board with the unassisted goal on a free kick from 20-yards out in the 19th minute for the 1-0 first-half lead.

The game would remain at 1-0 for the next 64 minutes, until Manhattanville extended the lead to 2-0 when freshman Charlotte Hotaling (Southfield, Mich.) headed the ball to junior Holly Nonis (Brampton, Ontario), who scored what would prove to be the decisive goal.

Kean cut the deficit in half three minutes later when sophomore Jenna Godwin (Kingwood, N.J.) (pictured right) deflected the shot from rookie Jaclyn Janicky (Brick, N.J.) to pull the Cougars to within 2-1.

The Cougars had two of the team's three corner kicks in the final two minutes, however a shot with 40 seconds remaining sailed wide, as the Valiants held on for the season-opening victory.

Junior Leandra Russo (Galloway, N.J.) made six saves for the Cougars, while her counterpart Ali Bromson (Suffield, Conn.) made 11 saves.

Kean returns home to take on St. Joseph's-L.I. in the Cougar Classic on Saturday, September 5, at 11 a.m.
