Field Hockey Opens Season with 6-0
Victory
CASTLETON, Vt. (9/1/09) - Senior
Brittany Gibbs (West Deptford, N.J.) and sophomore
Lauren Kusik (Randolph, N.J.) each scored twice
and had an assist to lead the Kean University field hockey team to
a season-opening 6-0 victory over Castleton State College on
Tuesday afternoon.
The Cougars (1-0) scored three goals in each half under
first-year head coach Leslie
LaFronz.
Gibbs, the program's all-time leader in goals and points, opened
the scoring 12:18 into the game, scoring off the assist from Kusik
(pictured right) during a scramble in front of the goal. Less
than two minutes later, Kusik knocked in the pass from rookie
Kelly Bachovchin (Piscataway, N.J.) for the 2-0
edge.
Sophomore Olivia Triano (Keyport, N.J.)added an
unassisted goal later in the half, scoring on a two-yard shot from
just in front of the net with 7:17 remaining in the opening half.
In the second half, Gibbs and Kusik tallied their second goals
of the game, each scoring off an assist from junior Kelly
Mataya (Woodland Park, N.J.), before junior Alyson
Guerriero (Westfield, N.J.) tacked on the final goal off
the assist from Gibbs.
In goal, junior Lauren Dobbs (Palmyra, N.J.)
made three saves in 60 minutes of action, while rookie
Alexa Barry (Morristown, N.J.) made one save to
close out the shutout victory.
For the Spartans, Siobhan Whittemore (Springfield, Vt.)
made seven saves in the first half.
The Cougars host Vassar College on Saturday, September 5, in the
home opener at 5 p.m.
