Beyruti Becomes NCAA Division III
All-Time Three-Point Leader
POMONA, N.J. (1/13/10) - Senior guard
Melissa Beyruti (Union City, N.J.) knocked down
five three-pointers to become the NCAA Division III all-time leader
in three-point field goals made as Kean defeated host Richard
Stockton College, 63-51, in New Jersey Athletic Conference action
on Wednesday evening.
Beyruti (pictured right) now has 369 career three-pointers,
breaking the mark of 368 held by Meegan Garrity of Clark University
(Mass.). After tying the career mark with a three-pointer
3:36 to go in the game, Beyruti broke the record with 2:01
remaining for the final Kean points in the game, as she finished
with a game-high 18 points and added four assists.
Junior forward Julia Fagan (New Britain, Conn.) had a
double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Ospreys (7-6,
2-2 NJAC).
Leading by only three points at the break, the Cougars (16-1,
5-0 NJAC) scored the first 18 points of the second half to open up
a 21-point lead at 48-27 following a lay-up by rookie
Naimah Clemons (Newark, N.J.).
The Ospreys would then use a 12-0 run to trim the lead to single
digits at 52-43, however that would be as close as they would get,
as Beyruti would then hit her record-tying and record-breaking
three-pointers to help seal the 16th straight victory
for Kean.
In the opening half, the Cougars led by as many as nine points at
21-12 on a lay-up by senior forward Danielle Brown (North
Brunswick, N.J.), before Richard Stockton pulled back
within a single point at 28-27 with 1:29 to go in the first
half. Clemons had eight points for the Cougars, as they led
30-27 at the break. Fagan scored eight of her 12 points in
the opening half.
Clemons (pictured left) finished with 15 points and six
rebounds, while junior Tiffany Patrick (Piscataway,
N.J.) had nine points, 11 rebounds, four blocks and three
steals.
Fagan was the lone Osprey in double-figures, as Richard Stockton
shot just 30.0 percent (18-of-60) from the floor for the game.
The Cougars remain on the road in NJAC action, as they travel to
Ramapo College, on Saturday, January 16. Tip-off is set for 5
p.m.
