Softball Powers to Pair of Wins

Kean Powers Past MCLA, Millikin

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (3/16/10) – Senior Allison Lizzi drove in six runs and pitchers Cassie Shotwell and Courtney Smyth each allowed no earned runs, as the Cougars defeated Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (8-0) and Millikin University (6-1) at the Rebel Spring Games on Tuesday afternoon.  With the sweep, the Cougars improved to 4-2 on their spring break trip.

GAME ONE: Lizzi, Shotwell Power Kean Past MCLA, 8-0

Senior centerfielder Allison Lizzi (Cherry Hill, N.J.) was 3-for-3 with five RBI and classmate Cassie Shotwell (Dunellen, N.J.) tossed a five-inning, complete game one-hitter to lead the Cougars to an 8-0 win over Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in the opener on Tuesday morning.

The Cougars plated all of their runs in the first and second innings, as they batted around each inning.

In the first, rookie Katie Schuh (Mount Holly, N.J.) led off with a single through the right side and junior left fielder Lindsay Kennedy (Parsippany, N.J.) followed with an infield single.  The Cougars would then load the bases, when MCLA attempted to get Schuh out at third on the sacrifice bunt and Lizzi followed with a two-run single for the first two runs of the game.

The Cougars added two more runs in the inning when Lizzi and sophomore Alicia Banz (Carteret, N.J.) scored when freshman Katelyn Marinelli (Phillipsburg, N.J.) reached on an error.

Kean again sent nine batters to the plate in the second inning, as Lizzi delivered with a bases-loaded double to score Schuh, Kennedy and Banz, who each singled earlier in the inning.  Marinelli followed with a single to drive in Lizzi for all the runs the Cougars would need in the five-inning win.

Shotwell (2-1) won her second straight game, allowing just a fourth-inning single up the middle by junior shortstop Kate Ouellette (Norwood, Mass.).  In the win, she had seven strike-outs and allowed just two walks.

Schuh and Kennedy each had two hits with two runs scored, while Marinelli added two RBI.

GAME TWO:  Six Run Fourth Inning Powers Kean Past Millikin

The Cougars scored all six of their runs in the fourth inning, batting around for the third time on the day, as the defeated Millikin, 6-1, in the nightcap.

After a scoreless three and a half innings of play, Allison Lizzi led off the bottom of the fourth inning with her first homerun of the season, clearing the left field fence for a 1-0 lead.

Later in the inning, the Cougars took advantage of two Millikin errors to score pinch runner Kelsey Hannan (Saddle Brook, N.J.) with two outs.  With the inning extended, freshman Katie Schuh had a two-run double, and two batters later with the bases now loaded, Alicia Banz drove in all three with a double to left field for the 6-0 lead.

Millikin plated its only run of the game in the top of the seventh inning, as they capitalized on a Cougar error to avoid the shutout.

On the mound, junior Courtney Smyth (Abington, Pa.), scattered four hits, struck out seven batters and allowed no walks or earned runs to improve to 2-1 this season.

The Cougars battle Framingham State College (9 a.m.) and McDaniel College (11 a.m.) in action on Wednesday, March 17, at the Rebel Spring Games.
