Softball Falls to Moravian
BETHLEHEM, Pa. (3/25/10)
– The Kean University softball team fell to host Moravian
College in a non-conference doubleheader, dropping the opener 6-1
and falling 10-4 in the nightcap on Thursday afternoon.
The sweep improved the Greyhounds to 10-6, while the Cougars
fell to 8-4.
GAME ONE: Five-Run First Inning Lifts
Moravian
Moravian scored five times in the first inning to power to a 6-1
win in the opener.
After back-to-back singles led off the inning, a walk loaded the
bases before freshman first baseman Amanda Dizinno had an
RBI single and freshman third baseman Shannon Mohr
followed later in the inning with a two-out RBI walk. Junior
outfielder Maura Agnew then followed with a bases-loaded
double to drive in all three runs for the early five-run lead.
The Cougars plated their only run in the top of the third inning
when senior second baseman Melissa Dietrich led
off with a walk and would later score on a Greyhound error.
Moravian added a run in the fifth inning on a solo homerun by Mohr
to close out the scoring..
On the mound, sophomore Jenna Carmon earned her eighth
win of the season, allowing no earned runs and just four hits,
while striking out one.
For the Cougars, pitcher Cassie Shotwell and
designated player Allison Thibault were each
1-of-2.
GAME TWO: Moravian Earns Sweep with 10-4
Win
The Cougars took an early lead when junior Lindsay
Kennedy, sophomore Alicia Banz (pictured
right) and senior Allison Lizzi each had RBI
singles and the Cougars capitalized on four hits and one Greyhound
error to take a 3-0 lead in the third inning.
In the bottom of the third, Moravian responded with four runs,
taking advantage of four hits and one Cougars error to take the
lead for good.
Moravian tacked on five more runs in the bottom of the fourth to
extend the lead to 9-3.
After the Greyhounds added another run in the fifth inning, Kean
scored the final run of the game in the top of the seventh when
Banz doubled to drive in rookie Katie Schuh.
For Moravian, sophomore Elizabeth Python earned the win
to improve to 2-1, as she scattered eight hits with one
strikeout.
At the plate for Kean, Banz was 3-of-4 and Lizzi (pictured left)
was 2-of-3.
The Cougars return to action on Sunday, March 28, when they host
DeSales University in their home opener. The doubleheader
begins at 1 p.m.
