Softball Splits NJAC Doubleheader
with #24 Rowan
GLASSBORO, N.J. (4/17/10)
– The Kean University softball team split a New Jersey
Athletic Conference doubleheader with host Rowan University on
Saturday afternoon. The #24 Profs (18-7, 6-2 NJAC) won the
opener 3-0, before the Cougars (17-11, 4-6 NJAC) blanked Rowan in
the nightcap, 5-0.
GAME ONE: Minix Quiets Cougar Bats with 3-0
Win
Sophomore right-hander Jamie Minix tossed a two-hit
complete game shutout, as the Profs won the opener, 3-0.
Rowan took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when
centerfielder Nicolina Veneziano led off with a triple and
would score one batter later on a RBI single by right-fielder
Heidi Smith.
The Profs added a pair of insurance runs an inning later on
run-scoring hits by senior second baseman Jenna DiDonato
and Veneziano.
For the Cougars, junior designated player Katie
Yard (pictured right) had both hits, as she finished
2-of-3 in the game.
GAME TWO: Shotwell Posts Second Straight Shutout
Victory
Senior right-hander Cassie Shotwell pitched a
complete-game shutout for her second straight outing on the mound,
as she allowed just five hits in the 5-0 win in the nightcap.
The Cougars capitalized on four Rowan errors, scoring all five
of their runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Senior designated player Allison Thibault
(pictured left) got the inning started with a bunt single and after
a pair of sacrifice bunts and four Rowan errors, Thibault, senior
second baseman Melissa Dietrich, junior
centerfielder Lindsay Kennedy and senior
right-fielder Allison Lizzi scored to give the
Cougars a 4-0 lead. With junior Katie Yard
on third base, rookie Courtney Melchionna drove in
Yard with a single up the middle for the game's final run.
Thibault finished 2-of-2 with one run scored, while Melchionna
was 1-of-3 with a RBI.
Shotwell (10-4) scattered the five hits and struck out six
batters in the victory.
The Cougars host FDU-Florham in a non-conference doubleheader on
Sunday, April 18. The contests will also be the
Cougars' annual Bat for the Battle, this year in support of
Friends of Jaclyn and pediatric brain tumors.
