Smyth, Melchionna Lift Softball
Past Drew, 2-0
UNION, N.J. (4/28/10) – Junior
Courtney Smyth tossed a three-hit, complete game
shutout and rookie Courtney Melchionna had the
same number of hits as Drew University, as the Kean University
softball team defeated the visiting Rangers, 2-0, in non-conference
action on Wednesday afternoon.
Smyth (11-7) posted her third straight complete-game shutout, as
she struck out five to win her 29th career game and move
into a tie for fifth place on Kean's all-time career
victories list.
At the plate, Melchionna (pictured right) finished a perfect
3-of-3 with a solo homerun and a RBI double to drive in both of
Kean's runs.
After a scoreless three and a half innings of play, Melchionna
drove the ball over the right field fence for the one-out solo
homerun to give the Cougars (23-12) the 1-0 lead.
Two innings later, Melchionna added the double off the
centerfield fence to score pinch runner Kelsey Hannon with the
insurance run.
Smyth was in control on the mound, as she retired the first
seven Rangers (10-24) and didn't allow hit until a one-out
single by sophomore second baseman Katie Eggert in the top
of the fourth inning.
Freshman left fielder Katie Schuh and senior
right fielder Allison Lizzi were each 1-of-2 for
the Cougars.
