Baseball Sweeps William Paterson

Lee Cavico and junior Ken Gregory
combined for 12 RBI as Kean University swept visiting William
Paterson University, 17-9 & 10-4, Saturday afternoon in the
regular season conference finale for both.
The Cougars finish as the second seed in the upcoming NJAC
Tournament and will face #5 Richard Stockton College on Tuesday at
3:30 p.m. at Jim Hynes Stadium.
Game One
The Cougars (28-10, 13-5 NJAC) scored eight runs in the first
two innings and scored in all but two innings to seal the win in
game one. In the six-run first inning, KU pushed out six
hits, including a grand slam from Gregory, an RBI single by Cavico
and an RBI groundout by catcher Eddie
Jennings.
Offensively Cavico was 3-for-4 with four RBI while Gregory
(pictured right) was 2-for-5 with three runs scored and five
RBI. Junior Kyle Walker was 3-for-4 with two
RBI while senior Mike Moceri was 3-for-5 with
three run scored and a double.
For the Pioneers (16-21-1, 6-12 NJAC) junior Frank
Franco was 2-for-6 with three RBI and a double while teammate
Miguel Lugo was 3-for-5 with an RBI and run scored.
Freshman Kevin Herget improved to 5-0 with the
win. He allowed seven hits and just one earned run in five
and a third innings. Rookie Brandon
Bujnowski picked up his first save after tossing three and
two thirds innings. He allowed two runs and nine hits.
Freshman Jacob Baron suffered his first loss of the
year. Baron (5-1) allowed 11 runs, all earned, in four
innings.
Game Two
The Cougars employed the same tactic, and scored five runs in the
first inning, to jump out to a 5-1 lead. After an RBI single
by Andrue Laguerre to start off the first, Kean scored
five runs on six hits to erase the early deficit. Gregory
started things off with an RBI single followed by an RBI double by
Walker. Junior Nick Nolan then hit a triple
to rightfield for an RBI. Rookie Steve Nappe
and Cavico (pictured left) followed with back-to-back RBI
singles to close out the scoring in the frame.
After tacking on a single run in the second, WPU cut the deficit
in half with two runs in the third. Sophomore Jack
Montanile provided an RBI double while Ryan VanderMay
added an RBI single up the middle.
Kean would go on to score four more in their next three at-bats
to seal the win.
Sophomore Julian Diaz earned the win.
Diaz (4-1) allowed three runs and eight hits with four strikeouts
and a walk. Rookie James Young suffered the
loss. Young (1-3) allowed eight runs, six earned, in four
innings of work.
